Russia is about to invade Ukraine. The west must send more arms to Ukraine and place harsh sanctions on Russia to stop this imminent invasion. This is the narrative you are being told if you read mainstream western media. But the context missing from this is the fact that the imminent Russian invasion narrative is widely coming from the west and is not shared by the government of Ukraine. This narrative also whitewashes the west previous involvement in Ukraine and ignores the history of the United States’ support of extremist groups like the Azov battalion.
Is Russia really about to invade Ukraine?
The west is convinced a Russian invasion of Ukraine is imminent but the Ukrainian government disagrees. Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine urged the west to cool its rhetoric over Russia invading Ukraine saying "We should have no panic. We have a powerful army”. Zelensky also criticized western countries for withdrawing the families of diplomats saying "I think embassy employees should be here.". Zelenski was not the only Ukrainian official who disagreed with the Western narrative that a Russian invasion was imminent, Ukriane’s national security secretary Oleksiy Danilov said he dosen’t share the Wests panic over an imminent Russian invasion and that “the buildup of Russian troops isn’t as rapid as some claim”. He also suggested that the panic was a distraction from Biden’s failure domestically saying the western panic was because of “geopolitical and domestic” issues in the West. Ukriane’s defense minister Oleksii Reznikov also shared this view. Reznikov told his parliament “there are no grounds to believe Moskow will attack”. In the west, there have also been a number of anonymous intelligence officials from Britain and the United States making dubious evidence-free claims about a Russian invasion of Ukraine. One of these claims is that Russia is going to back a coup in order to install a puppet government in Ukraine. This claim is not only evidence-free but is easily debunkable. For example, one of the politicians named as a possible Russian puppet is former lawmaker Yevheniy Murayev who has been denied entry into Russia since 2018 on the grounds of being a security threat. Volodymyr Fesenko, a Ukrainian political analyst told the Associated Press “Murayev is a second-place player. I don’t think Murayev has direct connections in the Kremlin.” Furthermore this claim does not make sense because Murayev is not even a member of Parliament. If Russia was actually planning a coup the most obvious choice for a puppet prime minister would be Viktor Medvedchuk who is Ukraine's most prominent pro-Russia politician and a personal friend of Vladamir Putin. Another one of these intelligence claims is that Russia is about to do a false flag attack in Ukraine to trigger an invasion. There is no evidence behind this intelligence claim and it should be taken with extreme skepticism given the intelligence agencies’ history of lying to manufacture consent for war such as the claim that Saddam has W.M.Ds or the claim that Gaddafi is about to commit a massacre against his own people in Lybia. In the 1997 political comedy “Wag the Dog” the fictional president of the United States played by Robert DeNiro stages a fake war with Albania to distract from a sex scandal. One cannot help but think this fearmongering about war with Russia over Ukraine by the Biden administration is an attempt to distract from Biden’s failure to pass his proposed domestic agenda such as a 15 dollar minimum wage, or the Build back better bill. One can also not help but think this is being pushed by the Military-industrial complex. The house is currently rushing through a bill that gives 500 million in “aid” to Ukraine that includes weapons. This bill would of course be a giant gift to weapons manufacturers like Lockheed Martin which has been sponsoring articles pushing for war with Russia over Ukraine.
Who exactly is the West arming in Ukraine.
Another important aspect of this issue ignored by the mainstream media is the extremists being armed by the West. In 2014 the United States backed a coup in Ukraine to install a puppet government. It was proven that the United States hand-picked government officials after the U.S. backed coup when US diplomat, Victoria Nuland was caught saying “I think Yats is the guy who's got the economic experience, the governing experience.” and “Why don't you reach out to him and see if he wants to talk before or after.” Arseniy Yatsenyuk or “Yats” was later chosen as Prime Minister by the coup government. This proved the United States was handpicking officials in this government that would be more favorable to U.S. interests. The United States-backed Ukrian coup government allied with and armed the Azov Battalion a far-right neo-nazi militia group fighting pro-Russia separatists in the Donbas region who opposed the coup government. In 2015 the United States passed a spending bill that included 64 billion to “combat Russian aggression”. The bill originally had a prevision to “limit arms, training, and other assistance to the neo-Nazi Ukrainian militia, the Azov Battalion” This amendment was later removed after pressure from the Pentagon. This shows that the Pentagon intentionally allied with, armed and trained neo-nazi extremists in Ukraine. Given this history, it would not be a surprise if some of the new bill giving 500 million in aid to Ukraine would send arms and give training to the same Azov battalion that the United States has been supporting since 2015.
The fearmongering over an imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine is clearly propaganda as it is not shared by the Ukrainian president nor top Ukrainian officials. It is clearly a way for the Biden administration to distract from its domestic failures as well as send arms to Ukrainian to benefit arms manufacturers. It is also a clear continuation of the U.S. meddling in Ukraine including handpicking a coup government in 2014 and arming and training extremist neo-nazi militias such as the Azov Battalion.
